Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

June 3 @ 8:30 am - June 14 @ 3:30 pm

Between Monday 3rd June and Friday 14th June, your child will be participating in the Year 4 multiplication tables check in school. It is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times table questions, which your child will complete on an iPad, testing your child’s knowledge of their times tables up to 12×12 as per the National Curriculum. There will be 3 practice questions before taking the actual check and 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s current and future teachers to celebrate your child’s successes and identify and address any gaps in their times table knowledge.

The results are used by teachers so that we can provide the appropriate support where necessary. However, we will share your child’s score with you as we would with all assessments completed at school.

Do I need to do anything to prepare my child for the check?

We have been working hard in school throughout the course of the year to practise times tables with the children. You do not need to do anything additional to prepare your child for the check, however, just like usual practice, you can support your child by asking questions such as ‘What is 7 x 8?’ and reciting times tables by rote (7 x 1 is 7, 7 x 2 is 14 etc).

If you have any questions about the multiplication times table check, please ask your child’s class teacher. For further information about these tests please visit: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/multiplication-tables-check
